Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Conflict between farmers and herders remains one of the most persistent challenges facing rural communities in Nigeria. These conflicts often arise due to disputes over land, water resources, and grazing rights, leading to violence, displacement, and economic losses. Community radio has emerged as an effective platform for promoting dialogue, understanding, and peaceful coexistence in such conflict-prone areas. By broadcasting messages that encourage mutual respect, conflict resolution, and cooperation, community radio serves as a bridge between different groups (Abubakar & Dogo, 2023). In Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State, where tensions between farmers and herders are prevalent, community radio offers a unique opportunity to foster peace and build trust among these groups. This study explores the role of community radio in promoting peaceful coexistence and mitigating conflicts in Bali.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite numerous interventions to address farmer-herder conflicts in Bali, these disputes persist, often escalating into violence. While community radio has been recognized as a powerful tool for fostering communication and understanding, its effectiveness in promoting peaceful coexistence among farmers and herders in Bali has not been thoroughly examined. The lack of targeted research on the role of community radio in conflict mitigation creates a gap in understanding its impact and potential for scalability. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the contributions of community radio to peacebuilding in Bali Local Government Area.

1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the potential of community radio as a tool for conflict resolution and peacebuilding. The findings will benefit policymakers, community leaders, and media practitioners by providing evidence-based insights into how community radio can be leveraged to promote peaceful coexistence. Additionally, the study contributes to academic literature on the role of media in conflict mitigation, offering practical recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of community radio in similar contexts.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the role of community radio in promoting peaceful coexistence among farmers and herders in Bali Local Government Area, Taraba State. It is limited to analyzing radio programs and their impact on fostering dialogue and understanding in the area.
